Hi boys and girls, mums and dads! I hope you had a nice long weekend and managed to enjoy some family time together. It’s hard to believe we are now in the month of May and the whole month of April has been spent at home. Keep up all the hard work, stay safe and I’m looking forward to seeing you all again as soon as we can!

Here are some suggested activities for the week ahead. Thank you to those who have been in touch to say they appreciate the weekly timetable being made available on a Monday. It is great to get some feedback and we will stick with this format for the time being.

Don’t forget to please scroll all the way to the bottom of this post to see any worksheets attached. Again I have chosen things that don’t necessarily need printing. You can either do them by copying the activity onto a page/copy at home or working directly on the computer/phone/tablet.

Remember there are also a lot of other activities and ideas in previous posts that you can go back over at any stage. These resources are ideal for use at home at the moment.

I have really enjoyed hearing from a lot of you while you’re at home. Don’t forget you can email me at any point. I would love to hear from if you have a question, if would like to work on something in particular with your child at home or even if you just want to say hi and share a photo/picture!

My email is  – room2@stbrigidsthecoombe.ie  Whatever it is, I’m here to help!

Le grá,

Ms. Stedman

1.         What was the King’s name?

2.         How many children did the King have?

3.         Aoife placed a spell on the children, what did she turn them into?

4.         How long did they say the spell would last?

5.         Where did King Lir go everyday?

6.         How did the swans turn back into children?

7.         How do you think the children felt when they were free again?

·             Sounds/Word Work: Revise the sounds /c/ /k/ /e/ /h/

·             Worksheets for each sound are attached below

·             Please use your blue sound copy to revise these sounds also

·             Don’t forget to go over the songs on YouTube and encourage your child to show you the actions for each sound. https://youtu.be/U2HYM9VXz9k

·             Drawing/Writing: Listen to the song ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ The children are familiar with this and love the rhyme, rhythm and lyrics. https://youtu.be/_tUBBh4QzTU Ask your child to draw a picture of the hungry caterpillar and to include 3 things that he ate on his journey.

2.         Maths: This week we are focusing on ‘capacity’, how much a container can hold!

·             Introduce the words ‘full’, ‘empty’, ‘holds less’ and ‘holds more’ to your child.

·             Open your fridge and compare any containers/jars/bottles you may have in there.

·             For example, you could line up a bottle of orange juice and a bottle of milk. Ask your child which one holds more liquid? Which one holds less liquid?

·             Complete worksheet ‘Holds More/Less’ attached below.

3.         SESE: The Lifecycle of a Butterfly. Show children the worksheet ‘A Bug’s Life’ attached below. Ask them the following questions:

1.         What can you see in each picture?

2.         How do you think a caterpillar turns into a butterfly?

3.         What picture do you think comes first, second, third and forth?

Watch the following video with your child https://youtu.be/dM71jKNuk-M

Activity: Ask your child to draw the four stages in the lifecycle of a butterfly and label    them 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Tuesday

1.         English:

·             Reading: Watch the video of the story ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ https://youtu.be/75NQK-Sm1YY and ask your child the following questions:

1. What came out of the egg one Sunday morning?

2. What did the caterpillar start to look for straight away?

3. Can you remember what fruit he ate on Tuesday?

4. Why do you think he got a stomach ache?

5. What was your favourite part? Why did you like it?

6. What is your favourite food to eat when you’re hungry?

·             Sounds/Word Work:  Can you find 3 things around the house that begin with /c/ /k/ /e/ and /h/  Draw a picture of what you find.

·             Writing/Pencil Control: Complete the two worksheets below called ‘Tracing1’ and ‘Tracing2’

2.         Maths: Watch the video ‘Finding Capacity’ with your child. https://youtu.be/zF3JSnEq7tU

Activity: Have some fun measuring water with your child.

·             All you will need is a large bottle, a large bowl, a mug, a piece of paper and a pencil.

·             Fill a large bottle with water. Ask your child to estimate (make their best guess) how many mugs of water are in the big bottle? Write down their guess.

·             Allow your child to pour the water from the big bottle of water into the mug. Each time the mug becomes full, pour out the water but count together as you’re going along.

·             You could also do this activity the other way around. Find a big bowl in your house and ask your child to estimate how many mugs of water it will take to fill the bowl. Again write down their guess and at the end, see if you are right!

Religion: Did you know that May is the month of Mary? This means that during the month of May we remember Our Lady, Mary in our thoughts and prayers. Boys and girls, can you remember who Mary’s child was? Can you remember the name of her husband? Mary was Jesus’ mum and she cared for him very much just like all of our mums love us very much too.

·             Please follow this link to watch a bible story about how Mary was blessed with having the baby Jesus https://youtu.be/XiY7Kfy-lMc

·             If we were in school right now we would be creating a May alter in the classroom. Maybe you could find a little spot to do this at home? See the worksheet below ‘May alter’ to give you some ideas of what you could place in your special space. You can also colour the picture or draw your own one either.

·             During the month of May see if you can find a quiet time throughout the day to pray our well known prayer ‘Hail Mary’ (attached below). If you create a May alter at home you could say your prayer there and take some time to think about all your friends and family that you are looking forward to seeing soon.

·             I have attached the colouring sheet ‘Our Lady’ also.

·             Don’t forget you can also light a virtual candle online for your loved ones. Just login to www.growinlove.ie and click on the area called ‘Prayer Space.’ Just enter the follow details to login for free - Email: trial@growinlove.ie Password: growinlove

4.         PE:

·             At this stage I know everyone is familiar with Joe Wick’s PE workouts every morning at 9am, and you can also watch his workouts at whatever time you like on his YouTube channel.

·             This week we’re going to pair things back a little bit and introduce a bit of calm and yoga into our day. Cosmic Kids is a fantastic YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

·             Our homes are very busy places at the moment and often it can be hard to get even 5 minutes of peace and quiet. It is important to have a little bit of quiet in every day where we can think about our thoughts, focus on our breathing and think about our feelings.

·             I would recommend this video to start you off https://youtu.be/8rp5bpFIUpg

Thursday

1.         English:

6.         What tune did Lester play on his whistle?

7.         What did the little elephant forget to do before getting into the bath?

*Elephant colouring sheets attached below also.

·             Sound/Word Work: Tricky Word Go Fish!

·             Write the following words on a sheet of paper and cut them out: I, the, he, she, me, we, be, was, to, do, are, all, you, your.

·             Remind you child that these are their tricky words, we can’t sound them out, we just have to learn them off by heart. Go through some of the newer ones (do, are, all, you, your) with them before you play the game.

·             Place all the pieces of paper face down on a table. Take it in turns to pick up a card. Ask your child to read the card and if they get it right, they get to keep the card. See who has the most cards at the end of the game J

·             Writing/Other: Practice writing the letters c, k, e, h in our cursive writing on a piece of paper. If you have some play dough or sand at home you could also use these to form the letters also. See ‘letter formation examples’ attached below as a guide to help you.

2.         Maths: Complete the worksheets  ‘Full/Empty_1’ and ‘Full/Empty 2’ attached below.

3.         Gaeilge: Try to practice some everyday phrases as you go about your day. There is also a fun matching game available at this link: https://www.seideansi.ie/naionain-bheaga/ga/index.html

Friday

1.         English:

·             Reading: Choose a Power Hour book to read by following the link below https://connect.collins.co.uk/school/Primary/PrimaryDashboard.aspx Log in to the teacher login section using the email: parents@harpercollins.co.uk and the password: Parents20!

·             Oral Language: Have a look at the attachment ‘What happens next?’    with your child. Have a chat to your child about what they think is happening in each picture and get them to describe or draw what they think is going to happen next, and why!

·             Sound/Word Work: Watch and learn this song with some of our tricky words. https://youtu.be/ri4u0TjAZ38

·             Writing: In school we had begun learning how to write our first names.

·             Some of the children were excellent at this already but we all need a little bit of help to write our names in cursive handwriting.

·             The cursive writing can be a bit tricky but it is going to help us all so much with our reading, spelling and our writing as we get older. I have attached a picture called ‘Children’s names’ to the bottom of the post. It contains each child’s first name written in cursive writing.

·             It would be great if you could pick out your child’s name, write it on a piece of paper for them and allow them to copy it a couple of times a day/week.

·             I would love to see some of you email me a photo of you practising to write your name! I would be super impressed to see your beautiful cursive writing. Let me know how you’re getting on J

2.         Maths: Under water counting game https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/underwater-counting

3.         Drama: Let’s go on an adventure together! Acting and drama is so much fun and so important for our imaginations. Click on the link below, listen to the story and begin your adventure to a far off land. Don’t forget to listen to the instructions and follow the actions. Enjoy J  https://youtu.be/xlg052EKMtk

Everyday

1.         Daily Oral Language Questions:

·             What day is it today?

·             What day was it yesterday?

·             What day will it be tomorrow?

·             What’s the weather like today?

2.         Play: Please see attachment ‘130 Activities to do at home.’ There are some excellent suggestions for things to do at home with every day household items.

3.         You are doing great!: It is not easy being at home and thank you for all you are doing to help your child with their school work! You are doing a great job and your child is lucky to have you. I have attached a poster called ‘You are doing great’ to this post. Have a look at it every few days and remind your son/daughter of all the things they are able to do. Allow them to tick off all that they can do and pick one or two things that they’d like to get even better at over the next few weeks. J It is so important to keep them motivated, help them to experience success and to have a few little goals to work towards during these challenging times.

4.          PE with Joe: 9am every day https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyCLoPd4VxBtWi7RnRLz6qHgOqWiB_LrH
