Rhyme of the week: Changes - all about frogs

Sound of the week: or

You did this sound last year in senior infants. In Jollyphonics, they put ‘ee’ and ‘or’ together but they are two separate sounds and the action for ‘or’ is your handing facing down on the top of your head!
Before you read on, can you think of any ‘or’ words?
Try read these or words.
For torch sport short
Pork morning fork fort
Storm afford more story
Corn forty sort torn
I have attached your spelling sheets and or activities below.
There are sentences with ‘or’ words attached. Write them down into a copy like we do in reading groups. Underline the ‘or’ words.
Tricky words:
This week I would like everyone to practice all the tricky words we have learned so far. I have included 2 roll and read mats full of tricky words below. We have played these in school. Roll a dice, read a word in the row of the number you get. If you can read the word cover it. If you don’t have a dice just write the numbers 1-6 on pieces of paper, face them down and shuffle, then choose one.
You can also write all the tricky words onto small pieces of paper and turn them down. I have included a list below. When it’s your go choose a word and if you can read it you can keep it. Then it’s your partners go. You can put it some ZAP cards as well for an extra challenge!!
Grammar: es plurals
This year we learned about singular and plural nouns.
Singular means one. One dog, one shoe, one book, one girl.
Plural means more than one and for this we add an ‘s’.
Two dogs, three shoes, four books, five girls.
For some words we need to give them a different ending to make them plural.
If a word ends in sh, ch, s or x then we need to put ‘es’ at the end to make it plural.
One church two churches
One brush three brushes
One fox four foxes
One dress fives dresses
I have attached the plural sheet for your Jollyphonics book below.

Geography: Counties of Ireland
I have attached a map of Ireland at the bottom of this post.
I have also attached some information to look at and for you to learn lots of facts about our country! Take a look below.
History: The Salmon of Knowledge legend
This year in school we learned about legends. These are old Irish stories. Before the TV, phone, ipad, xbox or even book was invented people told stories to each other for entertainment. There was a man called a ‘seanchí’ who visited people’s houses and told them legends. They all gathered around the fire and listened carefully. Do you remember ‘The Children of Lir’ and ‘Oisín I dTir na nÓg’ that we listened to?
This legend is called The Salmon of Knowledge’. Have a listen.
Have a look at the excellent video a school called ‘Mercy Primary’ made about The Salmon of Knowledge’.
I have attached a sheet with 6 boxes below, draw a picture in each one of different parts of the story. You can retell the story to your family!
SPHE: Making decisions
Every day when we get up, we lots of decision or choices, sometimes we don’t even realise that we made a decision!
What did you decide to eat for breakfast?
What did you decide to wear today?
Did you choose to go out to exercise on your bike or your scooter?
If you have an ice-cream or a chocolate bar, what choice would you make?
Some choices are easy to make and we can decide very quickly but other decisions take longer to make and we need to think about them first.
Before you make a decision, it is a good idea to stop and think about it.
For example:
You have a bag of sweets. Your friends have none. There are lots of you playing together. If you share, you’ll hardly get any. If you don’t share, people will think you’re greedy. What would you do?
I have attached decision making challenge cards, read them carefully and think what choice or decision you would make. There is also a worksheet to discuss here.
Music:
Listen to the song ‘Ireland’s Call’. We have listened to this before in school. Learn the words with your family.
A famous song in Dublin is ‘Molly Malone’. We loved this when we sang it in school. Sing it out loud at home!
P.E: Yoga.
Lately, I have been really enjoying doing some yoga each morning first thing when I wake up before I eat my breakfast. I find it very relaxing and It gets my ready for the day. I love the feeling of stretching my body, and each time I do it I feel I can stretch a bit further!
I love the channel ‘Yoga with Adrienne’ and she has a few videos for children’s yoga too. I love her dog Benji who is usually relaxing beside her yoga mat! Give the videos a go this week and let me know how you get on.
