Maths - Money

This week our maths focus will be on money. This is a nice one to do at home with real coins if you have any in your house. The children have previously done work on money in school, with a main focus on 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c and 20c. The focus then moves onto 50c. Have a look at the attached images below and ask your child to find the correct amount on each plate.

PLAY SHOP

You can play shop. Make up price tags using pieces of paper. Write different prices on the tags, e.g. 11c, 24c, 17c, 28c etc. At the moment, we only want to add up to 50c. Ask your child to place the price tags on different items in the kitchen e.g. bread, cereal, apples, oranges, biscuits, etc. Give your child some real or pretend money (you can draw and cut it out yourself). Play shopkeeper and shopper. Pick out two or three items to “buy” and work out how much they cost together and how much change you need to give. It may be a good idea to start with cheaper items to get used to it.

Ask:

Which is dearer/more expensive: the apple or the orange?

What is the most expensive item in the shop?

What is the cheapest/least expensive item in the shop?

If I buy the bread and the apple, how much will it cost? How much change will I get from 30c, 40c, 50c?

How much for the apple and orange together? What change will I get from 50c?

I have also attached some money worksheets below.

Some other ideas:

  • Take out a selection of coins ranging in value from 1c – 50c.
  • Ask your child to identify the coins.
  • Ask your child to show you sums of money up to 50c first using a variety of coins and if they are successful at that then ask them to show sums up to the value of 90c.
  • Ask them to show you the sum using the least amount of coins possible for example 75c = 50c +20c+5c.       90c = 50c+20c+20c
  • Put out a selection of coins in front of your child. Ask them to count them to find the sum. Encourage them to always start with the highest value coin and then count on. Look for easy coins to add as well for example they know 5 + 5 = 10 or 10+10+10+10 = 40.
